Census Bureau: 1.5% of people in Mellette County identified as multiracial in 2021

Of the 1,916 citizens living in Mellette County in 2021, 98.5% said they were only one race, while 1.5% said they were two or more races, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained in June.

The most prevalent racial group among citizens in Mellette County who reported being of a single race in 2021 was American Indian or Alaska Native, comprising 62.7% or 1,202 individuals. Following them, white accounted for 35.3% and totaled 676 individuals.

The percentage of multiracial residents in Mellette County is 2.9% lower than the state average, which stands at 4.4%.
