Senator Mike Rounds, a Republican representing South Dakota, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and related legislative efforts in early October 2025.

On October 1, Senator Rounds posted that "Senate Republicans voted yet again to pass a clean, 7-week continuing resolution (CR), which would keep government open and funded through November 21. Unfortunately, a majority of our Democrat colleagues did not join us and the vote failed. They want to address a number of". This message reflects the partisan divisions in Congress over temporary funding measures intended to prevent a government shutdown.

Two days later, on October 3, Senator Rounds continued his criticism of Democratic lawmakers with another post: "Every day Democrats keep the government shutdown, is one less day they have to work through regular order on appropriations to get anything done. I urge my colleagues to vote today in favor of the American people and reopen the government." The statement underscores his call for bipartisan cooperation to end the impasse.

In another post from October 3, Senator Rounds referenced former presidents in relation to foreign policy: "Like President Reagan, President Trump believes in peace through strength. Let’s allow him the opportunity to work his magic."

Government shutdowns have occurred periodically when Congress fails to agree on appropriations bills or continuing resolutions by set deadlines. Continuing resolutions are temporary funding measures designed to prevent interruptions in federal operations while longer-term budgets are negotiated. Partisan disagreements over spending priorities often contribute to these stalemates.

Senator Mike Rounds has previously advocated for fiscal responsibility and national security within Congress.
