FOIA Request to South Dakota Secretary of State - Elections Department Regarding Spring Elections Candidates for Office on February 6, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Central South Dakota News have sent a request under the South Dakota Sunshine Law, §1-27-1 et seq., to the South Dakota Secretary of State - Elections Department. The request was made for records in electronic format that detail the list of all candidates running in the upcoming spring elections.
The information requested includes each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are running for; the jurisdiction of said office; and their party affiliation. In addition, we have also asked for all contact information for each candidate which comprises their address, phone number, and email address.
We believe access to these public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities as a media organization. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we have requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await response from the South Dakota Secretary of State - Elections Department and will keep our readers updated with any developments.
