Running a newspaper today has evolved significantly from past decades. Digital advancements have transformed traditional processes, such as replacing dark rooms with digital photography and incorporating electronic media for news delivery. Despite these changes, the fundamental role of reporters, editors, and the entire newspaper team remains crucial. "We still rely on reporters to be objective," emphasizes the author of a recent statement.
However, challenges persist in delivering newspapers efficiently. Since 2021, while periodical delivery rates have increased by 40%, nationwide on-time delivery by the U.S. Postal Service has not improved. This situation compels local journalists to ensure timely distribution themselves.
To address this issue, a bipartisan bill called the Deliver for Democracy Act has been introduced. The legislation aims to improve postal service performance before allowing further rate increases that affect local news outlets negatively.
Earlier this year, the author received the "Support Journalism Champion Award" from the NewsMedia Alliance, representing over 2,200 news outlets nationwide. The award acknowledges efforts to support journalism; however, it is noted that "the real champions are the local journalists who work tirelessly every day."
In recognition of National Newspaper Week, gratitude was expressed towards those working in South Dakota's local newspapers for their role in maintaining community connectivity and vibrancy.
