Washington – U.S. Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) expressed his satisfaction with the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new ruling regarding the "Product of USA" labeling on meat, poultry, and egg products. The rule specifies that these labels can only be applied to products that have been entirely sourced and processed within the United States.
Senator Rounds stated, "Integrity has been restored to the ‘Product of the USA’ label." He emphasized the importance of this ruling for American consumers and producers, highlighting the end of misleading labeling practices that previously allowed foreign products to bear the "Product of the USA" label.
Various agricultural and industry leaders also voiced their support for the ruling. Doug Sombke, President of South Dakota Farmers Union, commended Senator Rounds' efforts, noting that the ruling would benefit U.S. producers by providing consumers with transparency about the origin of their beef.
Justin Tupper, President of United States Cattlemen’s Association, expressed enthusiasm for the rule, stating, "Consumers have the right to know where their food comes from, full stop." He acknowledged the persistent advocacy from congressional champions, including Senator Rounds, in closing the labeling loophole.
Brett Kenzy, President of R-CALF USA, emphasized the significance of stopping the mislabeling of foreign beef and called on Congress to ensure truth in labeling through initiatives like The American Beef Labeling Act.
Doris Lauing, Executive Director of South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, thanked Senator Rounds for his work in addressing deceptive labeling practices that had led to financial losses for South Dakota beef producers.
Warren Symens, President of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, welcomed the USDA's rule amendment, affirming the importance of maintaining trust and integrity in the "Product of the USA" label to uphold consumers' expectations and the reputation of the nation's beef producers.
The ruling marks a significant step towards transparency and fairness in the marketplace, with continued efforts advocated by Senator Rounds to support American ranchers and consumers.
