U.S. Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) have taken a stand against the recent decision made by the Biden administration to lift a long-standing ban on beef imports from Paraguay. The Senators officially filed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution in an effort to overturn this decision.

Rounds expressed his concerns, stating, “South Dakota farmers and ranchers work tirelessly to produce the safest, highest quality and most affordable beef in the world. Paraguay, on the other hand, has historically struggled to contain outbreaks of foot and mouth disease.”

Tester echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards for beef imports, “Montana ranchers produce the best beef in the world, and it’s clear that the USDA doesn’t have the data to show that Paraguay meets the same animal health standards."

The bipartisan resolution put forth by Rounds and Tester has garnered support from various organizations including the South Dakota Farm Bureau Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA), R-CALF USA, Livestock Marketing Association, and National Farmers Union.

Scott VanderWal, President of the South Dakota Farm Bureau Federation, highlighted the need for current data in decision-making processes that may impact the U.S. cattle herd. He commended the Senators for their efforts in protecting American producers.

Kent Bacus, Executive Director of Government Affairs for NCBA, emphasized the importance of maintaining the highest food safety and animal health standards, stating, “U.S. cattle producers are thankful for the leadership of Senators Jon Tester and Mike Rounds for applying the Congressional Review Act to hold USDA accountable and protect our nation’s cattle herd.”

The concerns raised by various stakeholders regarding the potential risks associated with importing beef from Paraguay have prompted action from Senators Tester and Rounds. Their dedication to ensuring the safety and quality of domestic beef has been acknowledged and supported by industry leaders.

In light of these developments, the resolution filed by Rounds and Tester stands as a critical measure to address the concerns surrounding the decision to allow beef imports from Paraguay, with a focus on safeguarding the integrity of America's beef supply.
