The Library will host a film screening of Oscar Micheaux’s “Within Our Gates”. The screening will be followed by a presentation entitled “Oscar Micheaux: From Homesteading to Hollywood,” by Marthetta Watson, which will begin at 7pm.The 1920 film, “Within Our Gates,” tells the story of an educated Black woman with a shocking past who dedicates herself to helping a near bankrupt school for impoverished Black youths after she is abandoned by her fiancé (description adapted from IMDb).Watson’s presentation will introduce Oscar Micheaux, a Black homesteader from Gregory County, SD who became known as the first Black filmmaker. She will discuss how many of his experiences on the prairie influenced the subjects of his numerous novels and movies and how his work juxtaposes the challenges of the homesteader and the challenges of being Black in America. A bibliography, film clips, and a display of original books are part of the presentation.This event is part of the Library’s Black Media is Beautiful event series honoring Black History Month with an exploration and exaltation of Black arts.
