On Jan. 10, 2023, the Pierre City Commission approved a motion to surplus the city-owned concession stand located at the Riggs softball field. The commission also agreed to gift the building to the Pierre School District.
The field previously hosted a variety of activities including several that were sponsored by the City, as well as other local youth sports associations.
“Now that the field is a dedicated high school softball field, City activities won’t be hosted there,” said Bryan Tipton, City Parks and Recreation Director. “Consequently, we have no need for the concession stand.”
Tipton did state that the concession stand remains in good condition and that the school district is willing to accept the building.
“We won’t use the building anymore, and its design doesn’t allow it to be easily relocated,” said Tipton. “The school needs a concession stand at the field, so handing it over to them just made sense.”
Echoing Tipton’s comments, Pierre Mayor Steve Harding added, “The City and the school district have a long history of partnering together. I’m pleased we can extend this asset to the school district for the benefit of the school and the community.”
The City of Pierre maintains four softball fields at the Oahe Softball Complex and nine baseball fields located throughout the community. The City also maintains 10 tennis courts, two soccer complexes, Pierre’s competition pool, and an 18-hole golf course.
