Explore ideas for eco-friendly living at McHenry County College’s Green Living Expo on Saturday, November 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the McHenry County College (MCC) Gym and outside in parking lot B, 8900 U.S. Hwy 14 in Crystal Lake.
The event marks the first return to an in-person Green Living Expo since 2019.
“We know finances can be tight right now, but people still want sustainable choices,” said Kim Hankins, Director of Sustainability at MCC. “That’s why our theme this year is ‘Going Green on a Budget.’ We have vendors and exhibitors that can help you save money on energy bills with affordable solar options, small but effective ways to make your home and business energy use more efficient, and innovative ways to extend the life of appliances, ink and toner, printers, and more.”
More than 70 area businesses, organizations, and artists will be on-site to demonstrate earth-friendly products, services, and unique educational opportunities.
Attendees can interact with luxury electric cars made by Porsche and Mercedes; shop for green gifts created by local artists; learn about green cleaning options, native landscaping, beekeeping, and the county’s first food coop; play with sustainable toys; enjoy free 15- minute yoga and relaxation sessions; view a 2,500-gallon fish tank with native fish; and bring pumpkins and fall décor for recycling and composting.
Vegan and vegetarian food trucks will also be on-site with food available for purchase.
“We’re planning the 2022 Expo to be a zero-waste event,” said Hankins. “We want to show the community it’s possible to have a large event with low environmental impact. All of our food trucks will use compostable/recyclable plates and cups, food waste will be composted, and all waste in general will be collected and sorted by teams of MCC students and volunteers.”
The Green Living Expo is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
The event is sponsored by the McHenry County College Sustainability Center, along with 12 area businesses and community organizations.
