MCC Saves Taxpayers Money with Approval of Flat Tax Levy

At their regular monthly Board meeting on Thursday, October 27, the McHenry County College Board of Trustees unanimously approved a flat tax levy for 2022, a move that will save taxpayers money and once again contribute favorably to the economic impact on the college district.

By maintaining a flat tax levy for nine of the last 10 years, MCC has saved individual property owners, on average, a total of approximately $119, or $11.93 annually.

“Since 2013, MCC has aggressively controlled the economic impact of the College on the taxpayers,” said MCC President Dr. Clint Gabbard. “One significant way this was accomplished was by keeping the tax levy flat. We’re extremely proud we’ve been able to do this without compromising the quality of our programs, services, or facilities, especially during these times of increasing inflation.”

During the 2022-23 school year, the College also had one of the lowest tuition/fee rates per credit hour at $128.25, ranking 38th among the list of 39 Illinois community colleges, with only one other college having a lower cost per credit hour. The state average tuition per credit hour is $153.46.

While the College is allowed, by law, to collect revenue tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) each year, MCC board members have voted for the 9th time in the past ten years to not collect CPI revenue and maintain a flat tax levy.

“Through constant planning efforts and reevaluation of expenses, we have controlled spending repeatedly to return value to the community by focusing on priorities and aligning our budget with our strategic plan,” Gabbard added.

“The Board of Trustees is impressed by the MCC Administration’s continued focus on effective budgeting and finance management,” said Tom Allen, MCC Board Chair. “The Board’s decision to maintain a flat tax levy again in 2022 shows the visible commitment by the College to alleviate the financial burden on taxpayers while maintaining innovative and quality programs and services that support student success.”
