October is Women's Small Business Month.

Everyday in October, On Hand Development Corporation will spotlight a woman in small business in Hand County. Our hope is to showcase some of the amazing women in our community that have owned or currently own small businesses.

Today, we are featuring Kristal Volquardsen, American Family Insurance Agent - Miller, SD.

Kristal officially started her business in March of 2013. She loves being able to help people and she wanted to find a way to be able to do this for the rest of her career. She wanted to be rewarded for working hard, but be able to make her own schedule to enjoy her family and friends.

The best part of Kristal’s job is getting to know people, what they do, and what they enjoy. She loves that her job changes daily and it challenges her to mentally to think outside the box and to try different things that she normally would not get to do.

Kristal’s advice to another woman looking to start a small business is, “Go for it! Don’t be afraid of the challenge-that’s what makes it all worth it! Surround yourself with people that believe in you and lift you up. “

When asking Kristal about anyone that inspired her to start her business Kristal answered,” My parents inspired me to work hard and to be independent growing up. I always wanted to be my own business owner. I just didn’t know what business it would be until I found my love for insurance. When the opportunity came, I jumped in with both feet with the support of my husband and family.”

There is so much to love about owning a business in Hand County. Kristal’s said that this where they feel at home. She really wants to know her customers and her neighbors. Hand County is where her love for insurance began.
