A public-private partnership is behind upgrades recently made at the softball fields in southeast Pierre.
Last week, the City of Pierre installed five new scoreboards at the Oahe Softball Complex. The project cost was nearly $31,000, and it was made possible by BankWest.
“We always welcome the chance to partner with the City on projects that benefit the community,” said BankWest Regional President Andy Hubbart. “The scoreboards enhance recreational facilities that add to the local quality of life, which fits perfectly with our mission to help communities succeed.”
BankWest has a history of sponsoring scoreboards throughout the community; with the addition of the new softball scoreboards, BankWest has funded 18 different scoreboards in Pierre. They can be found at LaBarge Park, Griffin Park, Hyde Stadium, the Pierre Aquatics Center, as well as the Softball Complex.
Pierre Mayor Steve Harding says that the City is lucky to be home to generous corporate citizens and motivated community members.
“Mark Gageby with the Oahe Softball Association and Jeff Hanig with our Parks and Rec Board saw the need for new scoreboards at the fields,” Harding said. “They led the charge to find funding, and BankWest answered.”
“Our initial ask was for four scoreboards, but as we looked a little closer we realized we needed five,” Gageby explained. “BankWest didn’t hesitate in sponsoring a fifth one.”
Mayor Harding says this is a win for the whole community.
“We should all be thankful for the team who made this happen,” commented Harding. “When you have nice facilities, it invites more tournaments. And tournaments put a lot of heads in beds giving a boost to our local economy.”
