Mobridge Pollock Lakota Education Committee Senior Honoring Traditional Powwow

The Mobridge Pollock Lakota Education Committee invites you to join us for the 2022 Senior Honoring Traditional Powwow on Saturday April 30th, 2022. This is a special event to celebrate and honor the achievement of our 2022 graduates through culture and tradition. The Native American graduates will receive an eagle feather, which is one of the highest honors in our culture, and a starquilt which is another common gift used in modern day honorings. These gifts will be worn and displayed with pride at their graduation ceremony in May. We acknowledge the amount of adversity that our ancestors had to overcome for us to be here today and honor that resilience by upholding traditional teachings and passing them on to future generations. These culturally sustaining practices are important as the Lakota Education Committee continues efforts to improve the educational experience and success of the Native American students within our school district. During the powwow we will also honor a staff member that has gone above and beyond to incorporate the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understanding and Standards into our school with the annual Lakhól wičhóh'an šna unspéwičhakhiye award (S/he who teaches Lakota traditions).

Powwows are often referred to as celebrations or social gatherings because they bring people together, are a time to honor our loved ones, and feature beautiful singing and dancing. We hope that you join us for this opportunity to share in our beautiful culture and celebrate the students’ achievements. I know it would mean a lot to the students to share this day with members of the community and supporting organizations. I am including a tentative agenda to give you an idea of what the day will look like.
