U.S. Senator Mike Rounds introduced Janet Alkire, Chairwoman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, during a Senate Committee on Indian Affairs hearing. The session focused on U.S. Health and Human Services programs for tribal communities.

Rounds expressed his support by stating, “Today, I am proud to introduce my friend, Chairwoman Janet Alkire of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.” He added that “Chairwoman Alkire provides an important voice on several key tribal issues, including healthcare, public safety and economic development.”

Alkire’s background includes serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force before returning to her community. She managed tribal government programs and served two terms as Executive Director before becoming the first woman elected as Chairwoman in 2021.

Rounds highlighted Alkire’s achievements: “In recognition of her leadership and advocacy, Chairwoman Alkire was named one of USA Today’s Women of the Year in 2025.” He also noted her role with the National Indian Health Board.

The hearing included multiple witnesses who shared their insights on health services impacting tribal members.
