Senator Mike Rounds, U.S. Senator representing South Dakota, recently used his social media platform to comment on ongoing efforts toward peace in the Middle East and to recognize outstanding academic achievements by students from his state.
On October 8, 2025, Senator Rounds posted: “The President and his administration have worked tirelessly to make inroads for lasting peace in the Middle East, starting with the return of all hostages to Israel and requiring Hamas to disarm.”
The following day, October 9, 2025, he congratulated two South Dakota students: “Congratulations to Bryn Marietta from Rapid City, and Ernest Ting from Brookings on being named 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars. This is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. South Dakota is proud of these young students!”
Later that same day, Senator Rounds addressed potential recognition for former President Trump’s involvement in peace negotiations: “If President Trump is successful in achieving this historic peace agreement, he should be very seriously considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. Thanks to President Trump and his team, we are seeing real steps toward a peace agreement that would bring the hostages back to Israel”.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program annually recognizes some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, and service. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has been a longstanding issue in Middle Eastern politics; international efforts have frequently focused on returning hostages and achieving a ceasefire through negotiations involving disarmament of militant groups.
