Statewide Medicaid expenditures in South Dakota reached $777,164 for services falling within the Enteral and Parenteral Therapy category in 2024, as shown in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This represented a 4.3% rise from 2023, when $745,440 in claims were reported.

Medicaid, a public health insurance initiative managed by states and funded jointly by state and federal governments, provides coverage for low-income groups, seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities, positioning it as a major component of America’s health care system.

Since Medicaid payments are funded by taxpayers, trends in claims demonstrate how health care resources are distributed throughout the community.

The Enteral and Parenteral Therapy category comprises certain Medicaid-billed services, organized by treatment type and based on consistent HCPCS and CPT codes. For this study, each billing code was attributed to a single service group using standardized prefixes and number sequences, enabling related services to be grouped together without duplication and ensuring consistent rankings year to year.

When appropriate, categories may include several kinds of underlying services. These groups cover related types of care commonly billed together in Medicaid, including office appointments, diagnostic evaluations, and specific therapies.

From the five years prior to 2024, Medicaid payment totals for the Enteral and Parenteral Therapy grouping in South Dakota increased by $648,866, or 505.7%. There were notable spikes during certain intervals, with substantial growth occurring in 2021 and 2023.

Although Enteral and Parenteral Therapy services were billed across the state, most Medicaid payments were focused in a handful of ZIP codes. In 2024, the largest shares went to ZIP Code 57104, at $613,559 (78.9% of all payments), ZIP Code 57108, with $129,644 (16.7%), and ZIP Code 57201, recording $18,846 (2.4%).

Together, these three ZIP codes made up 98.1% of South Dakota’s Medicaid payments for Enteral and Parenteral Therapy services in 2024.

Statewide, payments for all Medicaid claim types increased by 17.4% from 2023 to 2024.

While Medicaid spending widened across a range of categories, Enteral and Parenteral Therapy was among the 17 largest Medicaid service types by total payment for the state during 2024.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, national combined federal and state Medicaid expenditures totaled about $871.7 billion in fiscal 2023. This made up close to 18% of overall U.S. health spending, a significant rise from roughly $613.5 billion in 2019, ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This growth marks an increase of about 40% over just a few years, attributed to boosted enrollment and rising service use from the pandemic period onward.

Recent federal budget actions during the Trump administration involved major recommended reductions in Medicaid funding and new regulations for the program. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is projected to cut more than $1 trillion from federal Medicaid financing over the next 10 years, including introducing work requirements and higher cost-sharing that may limit funding and coverage for some users. These adjustments are likely to increase the role of states in cost-sharing and restrict future growth in federal support for the program as it continues to cover millions nationwide.
