The past week has been eventful for officials in Washington, with numerous meetings, hearings, and legislative actions taking place. Representatives from various South Dakota organizations made trips to the capital, engaging with policymakers and discussing relevant issues. Additionally, a budget resolution, containing an extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, was debated extensively, culminating in an overnight “vote-a-rama” session that ran from Friday night into early Saturday morning.
A series of meetings with South Dakota groups were held, including representatives from the City of Box Elder, South Dakota Trade, and Medgene Labs. Mark Luecke, CEO of Medgene Labs, along with Joni Ekstrum from South Dakota Biotech, were among the attendees. Students Ethan Gladue and Taylor Van Emmerik, members of the U.S. Travel Association, and other notable South Dakotans made their presence known in Washington.
Significant figures within the executive branch, such as George Street, who is nominated to be the Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, were also engaged. “We continue to meet with representatives from South Dakota organizations who travel to DC, as well as nominees for positions within the executive branch,” it was noted in a statement.
Meetings continued with nominees for various national security and defense positions. These included Thomas Mason, Director of the Los Alamos National Lab; Lt. Gen. Heath Collins; and Hung Cao, nominated to be Undersecretary of the Navy, among others.
Furthermore, the week saw hearings in the Senate Armed Services Committee, featuring Lt. Gen. Dan Caine for the Chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Other sessions included discussions with leaders of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command.
Legislative activities involved the introduction of the Rural Hospital Technical Assistance Program Act. This bill aims to provide support to rural hospitals, enhancing their ability to remain operational and serving their communities effectively. Attendees were reminded of the legislative implications of the budget resolution as the growth and stability of healthcare facilities remain a pressing concern.
